Introduction to the Analysis and Testing Center

I、About Us
South China Normal University Analysis and Testing Center was established in 1986 and is one of the university analytical testing centers in China that was set up using World Bank loans to purchase large foreign physical and chemical analysis instruments.
The center received the qualification certificate for inspection and testing institutions issued by the "Guangdong Market Supervision Administration" in 2019 and is currently capable of issuing CMA (China Metrology Certification) reports for tea tree essential oil and heavy metals in textiles.
At present, the center has 5 laboratories, with 24 large-scale precision analytical instruments, a total value of equipment exceeding 50 million yuan, and a laboratory area of about 4000 square meters.
The center currently has 23 faculty and staff members, including 1 Pearl River Scholar, 9 with senior titles or above, and 10 with intermediate titles; 6 hold a Ph.D., and 11 hold a master's degree.
2、Service capability
Our center provides a range of services, including personnel training for enterprises and institutions, sample testing, and data processing. Additionally, we collaborate with companies on the research and development of new chemical synthesis products, testing instruments, and automated quality control technologies.
The center serves as a collaborative laboratory for institutions such as the Key Laboratory of Environmental Theoretical Chemistry of the Ministry of Education, the Engineering Research Center for Electrochemical Energy Storage Materials and Technologies of the Ministry of Education, and the National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center for High-Energy and High-Safety Power Lithium-Ion Battery Electrolytes and Separator Materials and Preparation Technology. Moreover, we actively engage in industry-academia-research collaborations, analytical testing method research, analytical instrument development, and personnel training with multiple enterprises and institutions.
Currently, our partners include Nanjing Kejie Analytical Instruments Co., Ltd., Newspa Guang Sai (Guangdong) Biotechnology Co., Ltd., Guangzhou Hongqi Optical Instrument Technology Co., Ltd., Shanghai Sida Analytical Instruments Co., Ltd., and Guangzhou Jingu Scientific Instruments Co., Ltd.. These collaborations have yielded significant achievements.

4. Laboratories
(1) Electron Microscopy Laboratory
The Electron Microscopy Technology Platform is staffed by six engineers and equipped with advanced instrumentation, including three field-emission scanning electron microscopes (SEM), three transmission electron microscopes (TEM), one cryo-ultramicrotome, one ion thinning system, one ultrasonic cutter, and one high-precision pitting instrument. All electron microscopes are equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) systems. The laboratory provides comprehensive services for electron microscopy sample preparation, micro-area morphology analysis, and qualitative elemental analysis. It is highly regarded for the quality of its sample preparation and imaging in electron microscopy.

(2) Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Analysis Laboratory
The Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Technology Platform is staffed with three senior technicians and two intermediate technicians. The laboratory is equipped with advanced instruments, including two gas chromatography-mass spectrometers, one liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer, seven gas chromatographs, 5 liquid chromatographs, and 2 pyrolyzers. It also features a variety of sample preparation equipment, such as thermal desorption units, headspace samplers, purge and trap systems, accelerated solvent extraction systems, and solid-phase microextraction devices.
The laboratory is capable of meeting qualitative and quantitative analysis needs across various industries. It conducts research and development of analytical methods and sample preparation techniques. The team specializes in the development of chromatographic instruments and columns, analysis of plasticizers, plant essential oils, pharmaceutical quality control, power industry applications, gas analysis, online monitoring, instrument coupling, as well as the analysis, testing, and content determination of cosmetics and daily-use chemical products. It is actively engaged in fine chemical project research and has established joint laboratories with multiple enterprises to promote business cooperation. Additionally, the laboratory has set up a chromatography technology training platform.

(3) Spectroscopy Analysis Laboratory
The Spectroscopy Analysis Technology Platform is staffed with two senior technicians and two intermediate technicians. The laboratory is equipped with advanced instruments, including one inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), one confocal microscopic Raman spectrometer, one Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), and one microwave digestion system. It can meet the analytical needs for both inorganic and organic components, as well as qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis. The platform has undertaken collaborative projects in various fields, such as heavy metal detection in textiles, pharmaceutical analysis, polymer material analysis, environmental analysis, metal material analysis, and mineral element analysis.

(4) X-Ray Analysis Laboratory
The X-Ray Analysis Technology Platform is staffed with two senior technicians and one intermediate technician. The laboratory is equipped with an X-ray powder diffractometer and an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. It can meet analytical needs for inorganic composition analysis, structural identification, qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis, and surface binding energy analysis. The laboratory offers testing services in pharmaceutical analysis, polymer material analysis, soil composition analysis, and metal material analysis. It also has technical expertise in the analysis of nanomaterials.

(5) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy Laboratory
The NMR Spectroscopy Technology Platform is staffed with one senior technician and one intermediate technician. The laboratory is equipped with a 600 MHz superconducting Fourier transform NMR spectrometer, capable of single- and double-resonance testing for various nuclei. It is primarily applied in the structural analysis of substances in fields such as organic chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, biochemistry, natural products, optoelectronic materials, and polymer materials. The laboratory has expertise in organic structural analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and its applications.

(6) Physical Properties Analysis and Testing Laboratory
The university has also established a comprehensive physical properties measurement platform, staffed with three senior technicians and two intermediate technicians. The laboratory can accommodate a wide range of measurements in magnetism, thermodynamics, and electrical properties, including AC/DC resistivity, magnetoresistance, differential resistance, Hall coefficient, current-voltage characteristics, critical current, AC magnetic susceptibility, hysteresis loops, thermomagnetic curves, specific heat, magnetodielectric effects, electrically controlled magnetism, and magnetically controlled polarization.
5. Management system and objectives
Our center strictly adheres to the requirements of the Metrology Law of the People's Republic of China, the Standardization Law of the People's Republic of China, the Administrative Measures for the Accreditation of Inspection and Testing Institutions, and the Evaluation Criteria for the Accreditation of Inspection and Testing Institutions. We regulate internal management and have developed related normative documents such as the Quality Manual, Procedural Documents, and Work Instructions. Through rigorous internal audits, management reviews, quality monitoring, proficiency testing, and the supervision and training of personnel, we continuously enhance the standards, quality, and capacity of our testing services. We are committed to improving the laboratory accreditation management system and conducting our work independently, fairly, and impartially.
Focusing on the university's overarching goals of building a high-level institution and world-class disciplines, as well as addressing societal service needs, our center constantly improves its equipment and service technology capabilities. While supporting the university's scientific research, talent cultivation, and social service development, we actively implement the State Council's Opinion on the Opening of National Major Scientific Research Infrastructure and Large Scientific Research Instruments to Society and strive to provide services to society.
